ON THIS DAY – 1964: Light goes out in India as Nehru dies

Nehru and Gandhi

Jawaharlal Nehru (left) was a confidant of independence leader Mahatma Gandhi

Comment: It is up to young Indians to deduce whether the great grandchildren of Jawaharlal Nehru ought to be permitted to capitalise on the ‘Nehru-Gandhi’ dynasty – by which I must immediately make clear that Indira Gandhi (daughter of Nehru) was no relation to the great Mahatma Gandhi. In Britain we talk about cronyism, nepotism and insider deals.
The Indian psyche must change and it must change NOW. Indians must cease hero worship forthwith. I cannot stress it more strongly than that without insulting some of the people I care about.
